R&D Engineer
About the Role
We're hiring an R&D Engineer to explore new technologies, validate ideas through rapid prototyping, and push the boundaries of what Lit8's internal tooling and AI pipeline can do. This role sits at the intersection of research, AI and engineering — you'll help us improve our AI pipelines and build custom tooling to be used by our tech team and partners, turn novel concepts into working prototypes that feed directly into our tech improvement and product roadmap.
You'll have the freedom to investigate emerging techniques in AI, data processing, and developer tooling, with the expectation that your findings translate into tangible product improvements.
What You'll Do
- Research and evaluate emerging technologies relevant to Lit8's product direction
- Build proof-of-concept prototypes to validate new ideas quickly
- Design and run experiments to measure the impact of new approaches
- Create, maintain and evolve tech tooling between tech, AI and research and product teams
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to transition successful prototypes into production
- Write technical documentation and present findings to the broader team
- Stay current with academic literature and industry trends in relevant domains
- Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing through tech talks and writeups
What We're Looking For
- 2-4 years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on research or experimentation
- Strong programming skills in Python, C/C++ and web stack
- Experience with rapid prototyping — you move fast and iterate frequently
- Ability to read and apply insights from academic papers
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and systems design
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- Self-directed work style with the ability to define and scope your own projects
Nice to Have
- Graduate degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field
- Published research or conference presentations
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow)
- Background in NLP, information retrieval, or knowledge systems
- Open-source contributions in research-adjacent projects
- Shipped products with computer vision, 3d scanning and robotics
- Experience on building fullstack apps or scripts with GUI rather than pure headless software
